Beatrice Biira
Outreach Coordinator
Beatrice is the Outreach Coordinator for Millennium Promise (MP) and Connect To Learn (CTL), focused on sensitizing communities to programs, ensuring their cultural relevance and integrity. Connect To Learn is a global education initiative designed to ensure a 21st century secondary education for everyone by providing scholarships for secondary school, and using ICT to connect classrooms and improve access to quality educational resources for students and teachers around the world, even those in the most remote villages. It was launched in 2010 as a joint collaboration by Millennium Promise, the Earth Institute and Ericsson.
Beatrice has been a longtime advocate for women’s development and empowerment and has spoken across the country on issues of poverty, education, the girl child, and sustainable development in Africa. Before joining Millennium Promise in August 2010, Beatrice promoted the work of Heifer International, a nongovernmental organization based in Little Rock, Arkansas. She previously interned at Millennium Promise for six months in 2009 as part of her Master’s Degree field work, and also interned for then Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and the Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative.
Beatrice’s story was captured in Page McBrier’s book, Beatrice’s Goat, which reached number eight on the New York Times’ Children’s Book List. The success of Beatrice’s inspiring journey out of poverty resulted in appearances on the Oprah Winfrey Show, Good Morning America, and 60 Minutes, as well as a national speaking tour in support of the book. Beatrice is a Ugandan national, working toward her MA in Public Service from the Clinton School of Public Service and has a B.A. in International Development and Social Change from Connecticut College.
