Nzuki Waita

Operations Manager, East and Southern Africa

Nzuki Waita joined Millennium Promise in June 2009 as the Operations Manager for East & Southern Africa for the Millennium Villages Project. He brings over 15 years of management and development experience across sub-Saharan Africa, the United States and Asia.

His responsibilities include;

  • Supporting the overall implementation of all Millennium Villages in East & Southern Africa in areas of responsibilities, staff, procurement, community relations, and program interventions on agriculture, health, infrastructure, water and sanitation, education, environment, business development, and communications in all villages, as well as partnerships and external relations;
  • Supporting the Director of Operations in developing annual operating plans and budgets based on initiative goals and objectives;
  • Working closely with colleagues at the Earth Institute, Columbia University, UNAIDs, WFP and UNDP to ensure effective implementation of sector interventions in the MV sites;

Prior to joining Millennium Promise, Nzuki was Program Manager for the Touch Foundation Inc., where he was involved in establishing the project office in Tanzania and building management capacity at the Bugando referral hospital and medical college through working with the local administrative staff to develop budgets, manage HR issues, build procurement processes, manage construction and renovation projects, and assist with strategic planning and performance evaluation issues.

Nzuki also spent several years in Washington DC where he worked for Development Alternatives Inc.(DAI), an economic development consultancy firm as a management information specialist assisting in the development of client-based information systems for effectively managing USAID and World Bank international development projects. Before that, he was a cost & pricing analyst at the Academy for Educational Development (AED) and later a Project Associate for two USAID-funded projects located in Ghana and El Salvador.

Nzuki worked for 6 years immediately after college with ITOCHU Corporation, one of the world’s largest Japanese trading houses in their Nairobi liaison office as their Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) local representative focusing on implementation of Japanese government funded Education and construction machinery supply projects in East and Southern Africa.

He holds a B.Ed in Economics from Kenyatta University and an MBA from the Edinburgh Business School in the UK.
