Scale Up: Mali
In June 2008, the Government of Mali presented donors with a strategy to scale up a Millennium Village-inspired approach (“Plan 166”) to support the country’s 166 most food insecure communes to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). This five-year multi-sector program aims to address food and nutrition security, education, health, water supply and sanitation, energy, and roads and transport. The initiative targets approximately 2.5 million people, with special emphasis on northern regions, and seeks to strengthen decentralization and national resource management systems to enhance accountability, and community-based implementation and management capacities. The President has named the head of the national food security agency as the government focal point for the initiative.

Scale Up: Nigeria
The Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on the MDGs (OSSAP-MDGs) is leading a Millennium Village-inspired effort to scale up social sector services to reach 111 of the poorest Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Nigeria. Three LGAs will be selected in each of the 36 states and the federal capital territory. This initiative will be supported entirely by domestic resources, using funds available through the debt relief gains (DRG), in the form of conditional grants.
