Agriculture & Environment

Increasing food production and agriculture-based income while protecting and rehabilitating the environment are the main objectives in this area.

Prior to the project, most of the Millennium Villages suffered from severe soil depletion and land degradation, resulting in poor crop production. As a result, the project's early focus in agriculture was on supporting improved inputs (e.g., seeds and fertilizer) for staple crops and training farmers on improved agroforestry techniques to promote food security.

In subsequent years, activities have progressed to diversifying crops for enhanced nutrition and income generation, connecting farmers with markets, and building agro-business enterprises through value chain development.
